Naples Plantation Shutters

Naples Plantation Shutters | Sales & Service

Using exterior plantation shutters on your Naples home is an ideal way of making a statement while also protecting your home from the elements. As we all know, wood lasts an age when looked after properly, after all, our country was built on it. When used in climates like ours in Southwest Florida, they offer good energy efficiency too. Having the blinds shut and the windows open allows the sea breeze to enter the room while keeping the hot sun out. You don't need to spend so much on air conditioning in this completely passive system, that also provides significant curb appeal.

Plantation shutters have been a feature of Naples residential architecture since we settled in this land. The oldest colonial style houses had them all round, and the trend still survives today, with even some of the newest homes in Naples having them as part of the design.

Naples plantation shutters come in three distinct flavors, louvered, board and batten and raised panel. Louvered are the most common, and the newest design and offer the historical or contemporary appearance to a home. They can be as simple or as complex as you need, being either fixed in place to be purely decorative or fully adjustable to be used daily.

A well made louvered plantation shutter will last the lifetime of the home if maintained and looked after. They can have narrow or wide louvers depending on their use and which direction they face. Narrower louvers lend themselves well to facing the sun as they offer a more granular control over how much light gets into the room. Wider louvers are best for the sides of the property that don't directly face the sun.

Board and batten and raised panel both completely block the light from a room and are mainly decorative or for when the weather gets a little much. They offer the most protection to a window at the cost of flexibility. These types of plantation shutters earn their keep in storm season as they offer great protection from the elements.

While wood is definitely the material of choice, modern technology hasn't left the shutter industry alone. There are now viable alternatives in vinyl shutters, which are being sold across the country. They offer some advantages over wood such as lower maintenance and longevity, at the cost of character. Although a good vinyl plantation shutter will look almost exactly like a wooden one. They are molded to look exactly like wood, even including a grain if you want. They don't need painting, ever, and are much lighter than wood.

For many of us, wood is the only material to use. It's infinitely manageable and when it's properly looked after will last just as long as other materials. They need a bit of love and attention now and again, but that's part of the charm.
